Sharmine Miah

Sharmine is a Trainee Solicitor working predominantly within the Confiscation and Restraints department, and also works within the Criminal and Civil department.

Sharmine completed her Law Degree in 2017 and is currently studying the Legal Practice Course and working towards obtaining a Masters in Law at the University of Law.

Sharmine began her legal career at the age of 19 and has had exposure to a variety of areas of law ranging from General Crime to preparing cases at all stages of the Confiscation regime from Pre-Order to the Enforcement stage, including Civil Recovery Proceedings, to Civil Litigation and Employment Law matters.

Sharmine prides herself on her excellent client care skills by effectively tailoring her approach to the needs of individual clients and ensuring her clients fully understand the relevant law surrounding their matters.

As well as her client care skills, Sharmine’s drafting and negotiation skills have resulted in successful outcomes for her clients. Her recent successes to date include successfully drafting corporate veil arguments ultimately leading HMRC to discontinue proceedings against her client. A further notable case is that following her successful submissions and negotiations with the Trading Standards, her client’s Benefit Figure and Available Amount was reduced by over 50%.

Outside of work, Sharmine enjoys a variety of things, including: spending time with her family and friends, cooking, eating out and walking in the countryside.

Criminal Duty Solicitor

We are looking for  commercial minded criminal duty solicitors to join our team, in the midlands, who are looking to develop their privately funded and white collar experience. You will join a vibrant and knowledgeable  team who’s current duty  rota’s cover Birmingham and the Black Country. There are opportunities with a branch office in Liverpool and a strong own client base in Liverpool along with Manchester, London and across the Midlands.

Requirements:

  • Full time (9.00am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, with the expectation of additional hours as required by the business), but we are happy to consider part time applications so long as they exceed 14 hours per week to maintain LAA duty status;
  • Full UK Driving Licence and own car; willingness to travel nationwide as and when required;
  • Excellent administrative skills, any experience of audio or live dictation would be desirable, able to use legal case management software, after relevant training;
  • Good IT Skills (usage of Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Office and Case Management System will be expected);
  • Experience in Proceeds of Crime, Prison Law, immigration, conveyancing or motoring defence would be a benefit, you will be able to deal with the full range of criminal matters, to include motor offences, drug possession and some white collar crime, the firm are focused on quality  and look to expand the private client base.
  • You will be a criminal solicitor, ideally with a minimum of 2 to 3 years’ experience, with both the police station accreditation and duty status.

Proceeds of Crime/Criminal Paralegal

Full-time Role – Based in our Walsall & Birmingham  Office

Exciting opportunity in a developing young enthusiastic and expanding criminal defence firm in the Midlands. Crown Defence Solicitors are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and confident paralegal to join their Confiscation and Restraints department, along with their Criminal department. Although experience in crime and confiscation is preferred, we will of course consider experienced paralegals from other backgrounds if they can demonstrate that they hold the requisite skills for this position and have a genuine interest in developing in this niche area.

We are looking for someone who has a commitment to quality client care and who can maintain a high standard of work and concentration when perusing large volumes of complex evidence. Organisational skills are key. The candidate needs to be an excellent communicator as there will be direct client contact, as well as contact with Counsel, Experts, the Courts and other third parties. The department works closely together as a team however the candidate will be required to use their own initiative on many matters and therefore should hold excellent problem solving skills.

Due to the nature of the role and the level of clients, any candidate would have to demonstrate a high level of maturity and professionalism.

Opportunities to undertake Police Station accreditation allowing for additional hours for out of hours police station work to be undertaken upon qualification.

  • Able to demonstrate excellent communication skills including written and verbal communication, in particular it is essential that the candidate can demonstrate outstanding drafting skills as this is a key part of the role;
  • Investigative and analytical skills;
